What Are Dental Braces?

Braces are orthodontic devices designed to guide teeth into proper alignment over time, correcting dental malocclusion or misalignment as a result. They use brackets, wires, or related components to apply consistent pressure to gently shift your teeth into the planned positions. There are several types of braces available in Singapore, and the right option depends on your specific dental needs and lifestyle preferences.

What Dental Issues Can Braces Fix?

Malocclusion, or misalignment of the teeth, comes in various forms as follows:

Braces help address these concerns by repositioning your teeth to restore both functionality and aesthetics, covering issues such as overbite, underbite, crowding, and gaps between teeth.

  • Crowding happens when there is not enough space for teeth to sit evenly.

    • Teeth may overlap, rotate, or appear pushed forward.

    • Cleaning between crowded teeth can be difficult.

    • Braces help create proper alignment by guiding teeth into planned positions.

  • An overbite occurs when the upper front teeth overlap the lower front teeth more than expected.

    • It may place added pressure on certain teeth.

    • Some individuals may notice uneven biting or wear.

    • Braces can help adjust tooth position to support bite balance.

  • An underbite happens when the lower front teeth sit in front of the upper front teeth.

    • It may affect chewing, speech, or jaw comfort.

    • The bite may appear more prominent in the lower jaw.

    • Braces may be used as part of a treatment plan to reposition teeth and support a functional bite.

  • A crossbite occurs when some upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth when biting down.

    • It can affect the front teeth, back teeth, or one side of the mouth.

    • Some patients may experience uneven tooth contact.

    • Braces help shift selected teeth so the bite can meet evenly.

  • Spacing occurs when there are visible gaps between teeth.

    • Gaps may be due to tooth size, missing teeth, or natural jaw spacing.

    • Food may get trapped more easily in wider spaces.

    • Braces can help close or redistribute gaps as part of a planned treatment approach.

Types of Braces Available in Singapore

These are the common types of braces provided by dentists in Jurong or anywhere in Singapore:

  • These are conventional braces, which consist of stainless steel brackets bonded onto each tooth and connected by an archwire that gradually guides them into the desired position. Small elastic bands, known as modules/ligatures, are used to secure the wire to the brackets.

Today, metal braces still remain a popular orthodontic choice, especially among teenagers, as they can be reliable and cost-efficient.

  • Unlike traditional braces, self-ligating braces use a built-in sliding mechanism that secures the arch wire without modules or ligatures. This design reduces friction, allowing for smoother and potentially faster tooth movement. The absence of ligatures also allows better oral hygiene, as there are fewer components to clean around.

  • Ceramic braces work in a similar way to metal traditional braces, but they use tooth-coloured ceramic brackets. This makes them less visually noticeable while still using wires to guide tooth movement. While the aesthetics are improved, ceramic brackets are more prone to staining and may be more delicate than metal.

Are There Insurance or Subsidies Coverage for Braces?

  • The Community Health Assist Scheme (CHAS) provides subsidies for selected dental services at participating clinics.

    • CHAS subsidies generally do not cover orthodontic treatments such as braces.

    • Coverage is typically limited to routine dental procedures.

    • Speak with your dentist to confirm what is claimable under your CHAS card.

  • Braces are generally not MediSave-claimable because they are non-surgical orthodontic treatments.

    • Dental treatments are generally not claimable under MediSave unless they involve surgery performed for medical reasons.

    • Non-surgical procedures such as extractions, crowns, dentures, and braces typically fall outside MediSave coverage.

    • Always check with your dentist regarding the eligibility of your specific treatment.

  • Some private dental insurance plans may help offset part of your orthodontic costs.

    • Coverage varies depending on your insurer and policy tier.

    • Some plans include orthodontic riders for children or adults.

    • Submit your treatment plan to your insurer to confirm reimbursement eligibility.

The Procedures of Braces Treatment at Sincere Dental

1. Consultation

To better evaluate the condition of your dental malocclusion, the dentist will begin with taking diagnostic records of your teeth. This includes a detailed oral examination, taking photos, X-rays and 3D digital iTero scan. They will then assess this information and plan your orthodontic treatment accordingly.

Subsequently, the findings will be presented along with a tailored orthodontic care plan addressing your dental health goals and concerns. A 3D simulation of before/after results will also be provided.

2. Commencement of Braces

When you are ready to commit, the dentist will proceed with the braces placement, which is a quick and pain-free process. They will also discuss with you about the things to watch out for after having braces (e.g., diet restrictions, oral hygiene practices)

3. Follow-Up Appointments

Routine follow up appointments will also be scheduled in 4-6 weeks intervals, where the dentist will adjust the braces accordingly and monitor the progress.

4. Completion of Braces Treatment

Once the braces journey has ended, the dentist will remove your braces and you will proceed to the retention phase. This involves wearing your retainers according to your dentist’s instructions to maintain your new smile.

Life After Braces with Post-Treatment Care

Caring for your teeth after braces is important to preserve your alignment results. Here is how to maintain your smile:

  • Wear your retainers consistently according to your dentist's instructions.

  • Brush twice daily and floss to keep teeth and gums healthy.

  • Attend regular dental check-ups for cleaning and monitoring.

  • Clean retainers daily using recommended cleaning solutions.

  • Store your retainers properly and keep them in a case when not in use to avoid damage or loss.

Benefits of Getting Braces

Braces offer more than just a straighter smile, this orthodontic solution can also help to:

Prevents Gum Disease

One of the benefits of braces is that they can help reduce the risk of gum disease. Gum disease, often caused by inflammation due to bacterial plaque buildup, is linked to poor oral hygiene. And misaligned teeth are more prone to trapping food particles and plaque, which can lead to gum issues over time.

By straightening your teeth, braces allow you to brush and clean your teeth better, helping you manage bacterial plaque buildup and maintain your oral health.

Prevents Tooth Decay

Braces can also help lower the chances of developing cavities. Cavities, or tooth decay, occur when bacteria feed on sugars and produce acids that erode tooth enamel. When teeth are crooked or crowded, it becomes difficult to reach certain areas during cleaning, leaving more room for bacteria to thrive. By straightening teeth with braces, you could brush your teeth more thoroughly, managing bacterial growth that can cause cavities.

Improves Facial Appearance

By correcting bite issues such as overbites, underbites, and crossbites, braces could help bring your jaw into proper alignment. This adjustment can potentially give you balanced facial features, creating a more symmetrical profile.

Reduces Chances of TMJ Disorder

By correcting bite issues such as overbites, underbites, and crossbites, braces could help bring your jaw into proper alignment. This adjustment can potentially give you balanced facial features, creating a more symmetrical profile.

Frequently Asked Questions About Braces in Singapore

  • Braces are typically recommended for individuals after the age of 12, once most or all permanent teeth have emerged. However, the ideal timing can vary depending on the specific type of malocclusion (misalignment) a patient has. But braces aren't just for teenagers, adults can also benefit from this orthodontic treatment to address their misaligned teeth.

  • At Sincere Dental, traditional metal braces start from $3,815, while self-ligating braces start from $5,232. Student and NSF pricing may differ. Final fees depend on case complexity, treatment duration, and the treatment plan recommended after consultation.

  • CHAS subsidies generally do not apply to braces treatment, as orthodontic treatment is usually not covered.

  • Payment arrangements can be discussed during your consultation.

  • Based on the listed fees at Sincere Dental, traditional metal braces have a lower starting fee than self-ligating braces. However, the suitable option depends on your teeth alignment, bite condition, oral hygiene needs, and treatment goals.

  • It generally takes 18-24 months depending on the case complexity. Your dentist will assess your dental condition and give you a better estimate of the treatment duration.

  • Follow-up appointments are typically scheduled every 4 to 6 weeks. It's crucial not to miss these visits, as they enable your dentist to monitor the progress of your braces and make necessary adjustments. Staying consistent with your appointments helps ensure that you stay on track with your orthodontic care plan and achieve your dental health goals within the estimated timeframe.

  • The recommended frequency is at least twice daily. Floss/water irrigator can be a useful tool in cleaning plaque around the braces.

Remember, maintaining good oral hygiene while wearing braces is important in ensuring optimal outcomes.

  • Lisping may be noticeable initially but patients tend to adapt very quickly and will speak normally again once that happens.

  • Yes, but it is recommended that you wear a mouthguard to protect your braces and teeth when playing contact sports.

  • Braces are sensitive to damage, so you will need to avoid sticky or hard foods, such as popcorn, nuts, chewing gum, hard candy, and chips. Read our blog on what to eat in the first week of getting braces.

  • You may experience some initial tightness and discomfort after adjustments, as the braces begin shifting your teeth.

Additionally, if you are wearing metal braces, the brackets and wires could sometimes irritate the soft tissues, such as your gums or inner cheeks. To minimise this irritation, applying orthodontic wax over the brackets can help reduce friction and provide relief.
