Types of Braces

Orthodontic treatment has evolved, offering a range of braces catering to diverse preferences and needs. The following are the different types of braces available today:

  • These are conventional types of braces, which consist of stainless steel brackets bonded onto each tooth and connected by an arch wire, gradually guiding them into the desired position. Small elastic bands, known as modules/ligatures, secure the wire to the brackets. Today, it still remains the most popular choice of treatment, especially among teenagers.

  • Unlike traditional braces, self-ligating braces employ a built-in sliding mechanism that holds the arch wire in place without the need for modules/ligatures. This design reduces friction, allowing for smoother and potentially faster tooth movement. The absence of ligatures also allows better oral hygiene, as there are fewer components to clean around.

  • Ceramic braces are a discreet orthodontic option designed for individuals seeking a less noticeable alternative to traditional metal braces. While the brackets are still visible, these braces composed of tooth-coloured ceramic brackets are less conspicuous than their metal counterparts. Ceramic braces function similarly to traditional braces but while they offer improved aesthetics, they may also be more prone to staining and breaking due to the brittleness of ceramics.

  • Clear aligners are custom-made transparent trays, typically crafted from a smooth, BPA-free plastic material. They gradually move your teeth into the desired position by applying controlled and gentle forces. The treatment involves a series of progressively adjusted aligners, each worn for about 10 days before changing to the next set. Designed to be removable, this allows easy brushing and flossing and the ability to eat without restrictions. It is also a more discreet and comfortable treatment option compared to braces.

At Sincere Dental, Invisalign is our preferred choice of clear aligners.

Starting Your Braces Journey at Sincere Dental

Consultation

To better evaluate the condition of your dental malocclusion, we begin with taking diagnostic records of your teeth. This includes a detailed oral examination, taking photos, x-rays and 3D digital iTero scan. Our dentist will then assess this information and plan your orthodontic treatment accordingly.

Subsequently, the findings will be presented along with a tailored treatment plan addressing your treatment goals and concerns. A 3D simulation of a before/after treatment results will also be provided.

Commencement of braces

When you are ready to commit, our dentists will proceed with the braces placement, which is a quick and pain-free process. They will also discuss with you about the things to watch out for after having braces (eg diet restrictions, oral hygiene practices etc)

Follow Up Appointments

Our staff will schedule a routine follow up appointment in 4-6 weeks intervals, where our dentist will adjust the braces accordingly and monitor the progress.

Completion of Braces Treatment

Once your braces journey has ended, our dentist will remove your braces and you will proceed to the retention phase, where you will wear the retainers according to your dentist’s instructions to maintain your new smile.

How Much Do Braces Cost in Singapore?

An orthodontic consultation fee of $218 w/GST will be charged on the visit of your initial consultation, where full diagnostic records will be taken. This includes consultation, X-rays, 3D intraoral iTero scan, and photo-taking.

Braces Treatment FAQs

  • It generally takes 18-24 months depending on the case complexity. Your dentist will assess your dental condition and provide you with a better estimate of the treatment duration.

  • It is usually scheduled every 4 – 6 weeks. It is imperative that you do not miss your appointment in order to complete your treatment within the estimated time frame.

  • The recommended frequency is at least twice daily. Waterfloss/water irrigator is also useful in cleaning plaque around the braces. Maintaining a good oral hygiene is important in ensuring an optimal treatment outcome.

  • Lisping may be noticeable initially but patients tend to adapt very quickly and will speak normally again once that happens.

  • It is recommended to wear a mouthguard when playing contact sports.

  • Your ability to play wind instruments may be affected. However, with some practice, you should be able to get used to playing them.

  • • Sticky and chewy food: these can stick to your braces and are very difficult to remove.

    • Sugary food/drinks: these may increase the risk of tooth decays

    • Hard food: these may break the wires and brackets of your braces. Some examples include whole apples, carrots, French bread and crusty rolls.

  • Initial tightness may be experienced soon after adjustments as it may cause temporary discomfort when braces start moving the teeth. Brackets and wires may also irritate soft tissues (eg gums, inner cheeks). Use orthodontic wax to reduce friction if necessary.
